About our Alberto Núñez Feijóo news
Latest news on Alberto Núñez Feijóo, a Spanish politician who is the current president of the People’s Party (PP) and the leader of the opposition. He was the president of the Regional Government of Galicia from 2009 to 2022, when he resigned to run for the national leadership of the PP.
Feijóo entered the Parliament of Galicia in 2005 and succeeded Manuel Fraga as the president of the PP of Galicia in 2006. He led his party to win four consecutive regional elections in 2009, 2012, 2016, and 2020, obtaining absolute majorities in all of them.
Feijóo was considered a potential successor to Mariano Rajoy as the leader of the PP at the national level, but he declined to run for the post in 2018, when Rajoy resigned after losing a vote of no confidence. He supported Pablo Casado, who won the leadership contest against Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría. However, after Casado failed to improve the PP’s results in the 2019 and 2020 general elections, Feijóo decided to challenge him for the presidency of the party in 2022. He won with 62% of the votes against Casado’s 38%.
Feijóo became the leader of the opposition to Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist government, which he criticized for its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, its economic policies, its alliance with nationalist and separatist parties, and its plans to reform the constitution and the judiciary.
