Pele has had several health issues in recent years. In 1977, he had his right kidney removed, and in 2012 he underwent hip surgery. In 2017, he appeared in a wheelchair at an event and later collapsed from exhaustion, and in 2019 he had surgery to remove kidney stones. In September 2021, Pele had surgery to remove a tumour on the right side of his colon, and later that month he was readmitted to intensive care before being released to begin chemotherapy. In November 2022, he was taken to the hospital with "general swelling" and cardiac issues, and in December 2022 it was announced that his tumour had advanced and he required greater care due to renal and cardiac dysfunctions. On 29 December 2022, his death was announced at the age of 82.
