In September 2021, Pele had surgery to remove a tumour on the right side of his colon, and later that month he was readmitted to intensive care before being released to begin chemotherapy. In November 2022, he was taken to the hospital with "general swelling" and cardiac issues, and in December 2022 it was announced that his tumour had advanced and he required greater care due to renal and cardiac dysfunctions. On 29 December 2022, his death was announced at the age of 82.
