Latest news on Makiivka, a city in eastern Ukraine, known for its heavy industry and coal mining. The city has been under Russian control since 2014. On 1 January 2023 there was a reported shelling of military quarters in Makiivka. Russian and Ukrainian sources agree that the shelling was the result of a Ukrainian strike on Russian military forces based at a vocational school in the city. Russian officials claim that at least 15 people were killed and 300 were wounded in the strike, while Ukrainian officials claim that 400 Russian soldiers were killed and 300 were wounded, resulting in a total of 700 casualties.
