About our Donbas news
Latest news on Donbas, a historical, cultural, and economic region in eastern Ukraine. It is also known as the Donets Coal Basin, because it has rich deposits of coal and other minerals. The region covers the Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Donbas has been the scene of a violent conflict since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatist forces in the east of Ukraine. The war has killed more than 14,000 people and displaced millions more. In 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, aiming to capture Kyiv and other strategic cities. However, after facing strong resistance from the Ukrainian army and its allies, Russia shifted its focus to Donbas, where it claimed to be liberating the Russian-speaking population from Ukrainian oppression.
Donbas is not a homogeneous region, and many people living there identify as Ukrainian rather than Russian. According to a poll conducted in May 2022, 82% of Ukrainians in the territories occupied by Russia had a negative attitude towards Moscow. The majority of Donbas residents also support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and oppose the separatist movements.
