Latest news on the Acorn Project in Scotland, a joint venture with four partner companies (Storegga, Shell UK, Harbour Energy and North Sea Midstream Partners) developing decarbonisation projects using carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen technologies.
The project aims to capture and store CO2 emissions from industrial, power and hydrogen businesses in the Central Belt and North East Scotland, using existing oil and gas infrastructure and depleted gas reservoirs under the North Sea. The project also plans to transform North Sea natural gas to hydrogen, a fuel which burns without emissions that negatively impact the planet.
The project has received some funding from the UK and Scottish governments, as well as the European Commission. It is considered to be one of the leading contenders for the UK government's second round of support for CCS schemes, which are expected to be operational from 2030. The project is seen as a catalyst for industrial decarbonisation in Scotland and a key enabler for achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
