She is a member of the United Russia party and a former senator from Penza Oblast. She is also a mother of 23 children, five biological and 18 adopted.

    She is accused of orchestrating the unlawful deportation and adoption of thousands of children from Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. She claims that she is running a humanitarian evacuation of abandoned orphans and other vulnerable children. She has been sanctioned by several countries and issued an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.
