About our Manipur news
Latest news on Manipur, a state in northeast India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. Manipur is bounded by the Indian states of Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south and Assam to the west. It also borders two regions of Myanmar, Sagaing Region to the east and Chin State to the south.
Manipur has a diverse population of about 2.8 million people, belonging to various ethnic groups and speaking different languages. The official and most widely spoken language is Meitei language (officially known as Manipuri language). Native to the Meitei people, it is also used as a lingua franca by smaller communities, who speak a variety of other Sino-Tibetan languages.
Manipur has been experiencing widespread unrest since early May 2023, after indigenous communities held a rally to protest against demands by the main ethnic group in the state, the Meitei, for tribal status. The communities already recognised as Scheduled Tribes, especially Kukis who live in the hill districts, worry that they may lose control over their ancestral forest land if the Meitei's demand is accepted.
The violence has resulted in dozens of deaths and thousands of displacements, with mobs attacking homes, vehicles, churches, and temples. The state government has imposed curfews and internet shutdowns in several districts and deployed troops to maintain order and rescue civilians. The central government has appealed for peace and said that it will consult all stakeholders before taking a decision on the matter.
