A member of the Republican Party, Daines represented Montana's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2015. He is also the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the campaign arm of Senate Republicans, since 2023.
Daines was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Bozeman, Montana. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Montana State University. Before entering politics, he held positions at Procter & Gamble and RightNow Technologies. He was Roy Brown's running mate in the 2008 Montana gubernatorial election, losing to incumbent governor Brian Schweitzer. He ran again for public office in 2012 for Montana's at-large congressional district and won.
In 2014, Steve Daines ran for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Max Baucus and won. He was reelected in 2020, defeating Democratic nominee Steve Bullock. He has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and endorsed him for the 2024 presidential election.
