It was built between 1910 and 1914, and it houses about 1,600 inmates in seven different living areas. It is a close custody (level 4) facility, which means that the inmates are under direct and constant supervision by correctional staff. The prison also has a nearby minimum security area for about 100 inmates.

    On Sunday, September 3, 2023, the prison was put on emergency lockdown after about 100 inmates refused to return to their cells for seven hours. The inmates were protesting the lack of access to clean water, ice, showers and other amenities amid extreme heat and staffing shortages123. The situation was resolved peacefully with the help of negotiators and special response teams. No injuries were reported.

    On Monday, September 4, 2023, the Department of Corrections ordered additional and more comprehensive water tests to be done at the prison, after complaints from inmates that the water was dirty and brown. The department also brought in 51,000 bottles of water for the staff and inmates.
