    Arkansas is considered a red state, meaning that it tends to vote for Republican candidates in national and state elections. However, it was once a stronghold for the Democratic Party until the 1960s, when racial and cultural issues shifted the state's political orientation. Arkansas also has a history of populist and independent movements that have challenged the two-party system.

    Arkansas is represented by two U.S. Senators and four U.S. Representatives in the federal government. Both Senators are Republicans: John Boozman and Tom Cotton. Of the four Representatives, three are Republicans and one is a Democrat. Arkansas also has a Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, who was reelected in 2018. The state legislature is also controlled by Republicans, who have majorities in both chambers.
