The team was founded as the Denver Larks in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA), but changed its name to Rockets before the first season. The Rockets then changed their name again to the Nuggets in 1974. After the ABA–NBA merger in 1976, the Nuggets joined the NBA.
The Nuggets won their first NBA Championship in the 2022-23 season as the top seed of the Western Conference, defeating the eighth seed Eastern Conference challengers of the Miami Heat over five games.
