    About our Anti-Monarchy news

Latest UK anti-monarchy news, with the royal family a contentious issue in the UK and other countries where the British monarch is head of state.

Monarchy has been the form of government used in the countries that now make up the UK almost exclusively since the Middle Ages.

The British monarch is currently the monarch and head of state for 15 Commonwealth realms: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and the United Kingdom.

Republicanism is the political movement that seeks to replace the monarchy with a republic. Public debate around republicanism has centred around the core republican argument that a republic is more democratic and compatible with the notion of popular sovereignty.

Republicans support alternative forms of governance to a monarchy, such as an elected head of state.

In April 2023, YouGov polling found that less than one third of 18 to 24-year-olds were in favour of the monarchy, compared to 78% of over-65s.
