    About our Ruby Dhalla news

Latest news on Ruby Dhalla, former MP and first Sikh woman in Canada's Parliament, now running in 2025 Liberal leadership race to succeed Trudeau.

Ruby Dhalla, who served as the Liberal MP for Brampton—Springdale from 2004 to 2011, has emerged as a notable candidate in the 2025 Liberal leadership race. Making history as one of the first two Sikh women to serve in Canada's Parliament, Dhalla brings a unique perspective as the only leadership candidate who was not part of Justin Trudeau's government.

Since announcing her candidacy on 22 January 2025, Dhalla has positioned herself as a political outsider promising change. Her early policy proposals include negotiating with the Trump administration instead of imposing retaliatory tariffs, and she has requested permission to use a translator for the upcoming French-language debate while committing to deliver her opening and closing statements in French.

Beyond politics, Dhalla maintains a diverse career portfolio as CEO of the Dhalla Group, which operates in healthcare, real estate, and hospitality sectors. Her path to politics included notable achievements in academia - graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Winnipeg and earning a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. She also pursued acting, appearing in a Bollywood-inspired film, and was first runner-up in the Miss India Canada pageant.

Dhalla's political journey began early when, at age ten, she wrote to Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi advocating for peace during the 1984 Golden Temple events. Her parliamentary career saw both achievements and controversies, including successfully introducing legislation for foreign credentials recognition and passing a bill calling for an apology for the 1914 Komagata Maru incident. She maintained strong connections to international issues, particularly regarding immigration and women's rights.

Our Â鶹´«Ã½ feed provides comprehensive coverage of Ruby Dhalla's leadership campaign, including her policy positions, campaign developments, and vision for Canada's future. Stay informed about this historic candidacy as the March 2025 Liberal leadership convention approaches, where party members will choose their next leader and potential prime minister.
