About our Africa Climate Summit news

Latest news on the Africa Climate Summit (ACS), which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, with the theme of “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World”. It was the first summit of its kind, aiming to showcase Africa’s potential and leadership in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.

A total of $23 billion was pledged by various donors and partners to support Africa's climate action and adaptation.

The Nairobi Declaration, a document that summarizes the key recommendations and commitments from the Africa Climate Summit 2023, calls for:

- Accountability from the major emitters of greenhouse gases and urgent action to reduce global emissions and keep the global temperature rise below 1.5°C.
- A comprehensive and systemic response to the debt crisis in Africa and the creation of fiscal space for development and climate action.
- Multilateral finance reform and new financing mechanisms to support Africa's climate positive growth and green energy transition.
- Investment in Africa's natural capital, biodiversity, and ecosystem services for sustainable development and resilience.
- Development of integrated, livable, and inclusive African cities that are low-carbon, climate-smart, and disaster-resilient.
- Strengthening of regional cooperation and solidarity on climate change and enhancing Africa's voice and influence in the global climate negotiations.

The Nairobi Declaration will be the basis for Africa's common position in the COP28 summit in November 2023 and beyond.
