About our Steve Harwell news

Latest news on Steve Harwell, an American singer and the former lead vocalist of the rock band Smash Mouth.

He was born on January 9, 1967 in California and started his musical career in the rap group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech) before forming Smash Mouth in 1994 with three other musicians. Smash Mouth had a distinctive sound that blended pop, rock, ska, lounge music and more, and achieved several hits in the 1990s and 2000s, such as Walkin' on the Sun, All Star, I'm a Believer and Why Can't We Be Friends?.

All Star became their most popular song, reaching the US Top 5 and featuring in the animated movie Shrek, which made the band an internet sensation with memes and parodies.

Harwell faced numerous health issues in recent years, including alcoholism, heart disease, liver failure and a neurological disorder that affected his memory and speech. He retired from Smash Mouth in 2021 after a controversial performance in New York where he appeared intoxicated and yelled at the audience.

He died on 4 September 2023 at the age of 56 at his home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by his family and friends. His manager Robert Hayes said that Harwell "passed peacefully and comfortably" and praised his "iconic voice" as "one of the most recognisable voices from his generation".
