Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine, were indicted on federal bribery charges in September 2023. Prosecutors accused them of accepting gold bars, cash, and other lavish gifts in exchange for the senator’s political influence. The charges included allegations that Menendez provided sensitive information to the Egyptian government and attempted to influence US policy on their behalf. In October 2023, he was additionally charged with conspiracy to act as a foreign agent, making him the first sitting US senator to face such accusations.
Further investigations led to a superseding indictment in January 2024, alleging that Menendez had also engaged in corrupt dealings with the Qatari government. In March 2024, he was charged with obstruction of justice. By July, a jury found him guilty on all counts, leading to his resignation from the Senate in August. In January 2025, Menendez was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
his was not Menendez’s first corruption case. In 2015, he was indicted on similar charges related to gifts from a wealthy donor, but the trial ended in a mistrial, and prosecutors later dropped the charges. However, in 2018, the Senate Ethics Committee "severely admonished" him for accepting unapproved gifts and using his position to advance a donor’s interests.
Menendez has maintained his innocence, claiming he was the target of a political vendetta. During his sentencing, he pleaded for leniency, citing concerns for his autistic son. Despite his conviction and imprisonment, Menendez has vowed to appeal the verdict.
