About our Kurdistan news
Latest news for Kurdistan, or Greater Kurdistan, a geo-cultural territory in western Asia where Kurds and Kurdish culture have been historically centred.
As the historical cultural region of a people, Kurdistan is a defined area which does not correlate with modern borders, incorporating parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Some definitions even include parts of Transcaucasia.
The term “Kurdistan” is first recorded as early as the 11th Century AD, whilst various Kurdish states have existed since the 8th Century AD. Despite this, no significant Kurdish state has arisen since the beginning of the 20th Century. Following the Syrian Civil War and the wider war against ISIS, however, Kurdish elements have arisen to secure relative self-autonomy in areas like Rojava. Despite this, reaction among local powers such as Turkey and Syria has been hostile.
