    About our Belize news

Latest current affairs news on Belize, including updates on politics, economy, social and domestic issues, and international relations.

Belize is located on the north-eastern coast of Central America, sharing borders with Mexico and Guatemala. The country covers an area of approximately 22,970 square kilometres (8,867 square miles) and has a population of around 400,000, making it the least populated and least densely populated country in Central America. Its capital is Belmopan, and its largest city is the namesake city of Belize City.

Belize's government follows a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarch, with the British monarch as the ceremonial head of state, represented by a Governor-General. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1981, and is the only mainland Central American country which is a Commonwealth realm.

Belize has a diverse society composed of many cultures and languages, with influences from indigenous Maya, Afro-Caribbean, and Mestizo communities. It is the only Central American country where English is the official language, while Belizean Creole is the most widely spoken dialect.
