She served as one of the vice presidents of the European Parliament until December 2022, when she was arrested and charged with corruption. Kaili is a former member of the Hellenic Parliament and was a television news presenter for a Greek television channel. In December 2022, she was arrested by Belgian Federal Police as part of an investigation into organised crime, corruption, and money laundering related to lobbying efforts in support of Qatar. The Greek Anti-Money Laundering Authority also froze all of Kaili's and her family's assets, including bank accounts, safes, companies, and other financial assets. The timing of the arrests coincided with the 2022 FIFA World Cup being hosted in Qatar, during which Kaili had praised the country's human rights record and criticised accusations of corruption made against it. She is currently under house arrest and awaiting trial.
