He is a pro-Moscow opposition figure in Moldovan politics and has been accused of being involved in Kremlin's efforts to subvert Moldova. In October 2022, he was sanctioned by the United States Department of Treasury over his association with the Russian government. Ilan Șor is accused of working with Moscow-based entities to undermine the pro-western government of Moldova. Nicu Popescu, the country's foreign minister, has called on the EU to impose sanctions on Șor.
