About our UK/Rwanda news

Latest news on UK-Rwanda international relations, including updates on the UK Home Office plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

On 14 April 2022, the UK government announced plans to send certain people seeking UK asylum to the Republic of Rwanda, where the Rwandan government would decide their claims. If successful, they would be granted asylum in Rwanda, not the UK. This policy was proposed by the Conservative government to address increasing numbers of people reaching the UK without authorisation by crossing the English Channel in small boats.

The first flight taking asylum seekers to Rwanda was scheduled for 14 June 2022 but was cancelled due to an injunction issued by the European Court of Human Rights. On 15 November 2023, the UK’s Supreme Court declared the policy unlawful because Rwanda was not a safe country.
