    About our Anglophone Crisis news

Latest news and updates on the Anglophone Crisis, an ongoing conflict also known as the Cameroonian Civil War, that began in September 2017.

Also called The Ambazonian War, it is taking place in the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon, where historically English-speaking Ambazonian separatists are seeking the independence of the former British trust territory of Southern Cameroons, which was unified with Cameroon since 1961.

The crisis started as a series of protests by Anglophone lawyers and teachers in 2016, who demanded more recognition of their rights and culture in the predominantly Francophone country. The protests were met with repression by the Cameroonian government, which led to some separatists taking up arms and declaring the Republic of Ambazonia in 2017. The Cameroonian government declared war on the separatists and sent its army to crush the rebellion.

The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths, human rights violations, and displacement of civilians on both sides. The UN estimates that over 700,000 people have been displaced, with many fleeing to neighbouring Nigeria.
