Rugby union in Italy began in the early 20th century, notably with the establishment of the men's national team, nicknamed the Gli Azzurri, in 1929. In 2000, Italy was admitted into what was then the Five Nations Championship, forming the current Six Nations Championship as a result.
The Italy women's national rugby union team, also known as the Le Azzurre, was founded in 1985 and was initially administered by the UISP, an association which promotes amateur sports, before falling under the purview of the the Italian Rugby Federation. The Italian women's team formally entered the Women's Six Nations Championship in 2006 when the Executive Committee of the Six Nations decided to align the composition of all competitions of the tournament with the men's.
