About our Hardeep Singh Nijjar news

Latest news on Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh leader who was killed in a shooting on 18 June 2023 in Surrey, British Columbia. He was a supporter of the Khalistan movement, which seeks to create a separate state for Sikhs in India's Punjab region.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was also wanted by India for allegedly being involved in terrorist activities. His death has sparked protests and tensions between Canada and India, with the PM accusing India of being behind the assassination.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that there is credible evidence that India was behind Nijjar's murder and that he condemned the act. He also said that he raised the issue with Modi in New Delhi and that Canada is a rule of law country that will not tolerate any foreign interference in its sovereignty. He said the following in his statement:

"Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty. Canada is a rule of law country, the protection of our citizens in defence of our sovereignty are fundamental. Our top priorities have therefore been one, that our law enforcement and security agencies ensure the continued safety of all Canadians. And two, that all steps be taken to hold perpetrators of this murder to account. Our government has declared its deep concerns about possible Indian involvement in this killing to the Indian government, both publicly and privately. I raised this issue in no uncertain terms with Prime Minister Modi when I met with him last week at the G20 summit. This killing is contrary to the fundamental rules by which free, open, and democratic societies conduct themselves".

India has rejected the claims made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that there is credible evidence that India was behind Nijjar's murder. India's foreign ministry spokesperson said that the accusations were "absurd" and "motivated by domestic political considerations" in Canada³. He also said that India had sought Nijjar's extradition for his involvement in terrorist activities, but Canada had not cooperated.
