He is best known for his debut novel, Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew, which won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book. In 2022, he won the Booker prize for his novel 'The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida', a satire set during the Sri Lankan civil war.
